ABSTRACT
Sleep disturbances are a prominent feature of many neuropsychiatric disorders. Although disturbed sleep is also a prominent feature of schizophrenia, its relationship with the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms of schizophrenia is not fully understood. Cognitive dysfunctions are frequently observed in patients with schizophrenia. It is thought that sleep disorders are an important mechanism that contributes to these basic dysfunctions by accompanying the disease. In this review, the relationship between sleep-related memory consolidation in patients with schizophrenia was investigated. Accordingly, the neurobiology of sleep, memory processes, sleep-related memory consolidation in healthy individuals, and sleep-related memory consolidation in schizophrenia are reviewed.
